Man in SA illegally sentenced to 4 life terms for rape of two teen stepdaughters

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A man, who raped his two teenage stepdaughters, has been handed four life terms and 21 years behind bars.

The man, from Mozambique, was sentenced in the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate’s Court, in Pretoria, on Friday for rape, causing grievous bodily harm, and being in the country illegally. The sentences will run concurrently.

According to National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Lumka Mahanjana, the man lived with the mother and the teenagers, aged 13 and 15.

Mahanjana said the man would request sexual favours from the girls when they wanted clothes.

“He would take them one by one to collect wood or feed chickens, then rape them,” said Mahanjana.

This happened for several years and the family became aware of the incident in 2019 after the 13-year-old asked other children whether they repaid their fathers with sex for clothes.

“The adults at the function, including the mother, overheard the conversation. They reported the incident to the police, who arrested the stepfather in January 2020.

“He remained in custody after the NPA opposed his bail. He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in court,” she said.

The prosecutor, Akanyang Ben Smith, argued for the maximum sentence, saying: “A man who was supposed to protect and be their father brutally invaded their privacy and integrity at a tender age.”
