Africa-Press – South-Africa. Only 11 days have passed since the start of their final exams, but matrics in the Western Cape have allegedly been caught attempting to sneak prohibited cellphones and crib notes into exam venues no less than 14 times.
The Western Cape Education Department said it had received the 14 reports by Thursday morning.
“This clearly demonstrates that our monitoring processes are working and that our invigilators are well trained to keep a close eye on the conduct of candidates during the exam. Each reported incident will be thoroughly investigated, and the candidate in question is given the opportunity to make representations to a hearing, following the exam session,” Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier said.
The candidate will also have the opportunity to appeal the finding.
Maynier added that matric pupils could not claim ignorance of the rules because they were required to sign a commitment agreement before the beginning of the exam session.
A pupil found guilty of breaking the rules faces disqualification and could be barred from up to three future exam sessions.
There have been no reports of leaked question papers in the province, according to Maynier.
Almost 74 000 Western Cape candidates started writing the National Senior Certificate exams on 31 October.
There are 1 889 invigilators who are overseeing 478 examination centres.
The 870 000 answer scripts will then be marked by 3 313 markers at 11 marking centres in the province.
