Africa-Press – South-Africa. The African National Congress (ANC) in KwaZulu-Natal has recalled Siphile Mdaka as the Deputy Mayor of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality, hours after he was elected to the post.

Mdaka was elected during a council meeting on Thursday.

But shortly after the vote, the ANC ordered him to resign, saying he should be the mayor.

Earlier this month, Mdaka was removed as the mayor of the uMkhanyakude District Municipality, through a vote of no confidence tabled by the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP).

He was replaced by the IFP’s Comfort Khumalo.

However, on Thursday, Mdaka was elected as Khumalo’s deputy something the ANC wasn’t happy about.

It said it did not sanction the move and instructed him to resign with immediate effect.

The ANC praised Mdaka for the leadership he demonstrated while he was the uMkhanyakude District Municipality Mayor.

The party said it maintains that he should be reinstated as mayor and serve as deputy mayor.
