Africa-Press – South-Africa. Western Cape authorities dished out 7 589 traffic fines, worth more than R7 million, in the last week.

Between 7 and 13 March, provincial authorities held 174 integrated roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints and speed control operations, which stopped and checked 34 531 vehicles.

Seventy-three vehicles were impounded, and 116 were declared unroadworthy.

The MEC for Transport and Public Works, Daylin Mitchell, was concerned about speeding on the roads.

Government extends National State of Disaster again

“Speeding is irresponsible and dangerous. The faster you drive, the less time you have to respond to an emergency and the more space you need to stop to avoid a crash,” said Mitchell.

Thirty-one crashes occurred during this period, with 24 deaths recorded.

Fifty arrests were made, of which 24 were for driving under the influence of alcohol and six for having fraudulent documentation.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, a traffic officer on routine patrol on the N2, near Grabouw, pulled over a vehicle travelling in the direction of Cape Town. During the stop-and-search process, the driver refused to open the vehicle’s boot.

The 40-year-old man then tried to bribe the officer before fleeing the scene.

Upon searching the vehicle, more than one thousand units of abalone were discovered, with a street value of R400 000.

“The suspect has since been apprehended. The vehicle and abalone have been handed over to SAPS,” said Mitchell.
