One more in court after a bloody month of mass shootings

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A man appeared in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court this week for the murder of three men during a mass shooting in the suburb.

It concludes a bloody month of mass shootings across the country.

Lusanda Gqamana was arrested on 25 July. He faces three charges of murder relating to the shooting on 16 July in Site C, Khayelitsha.

Kwezi Mphummzi, 34, Mveleli Nobuzana, 36, and Howard Mjamba, 50, were killed.

Police traced Gqamana, and he was arrested.

He appeared in court on Wednesday and will stay in custody until his bail hearing.

The Story: What is behind the increase in mass shootings in SA?

A resident of Solomon Tshuku Street, Gqamana is understood to have a previous conviction for the unlawful possession of a firearm, which dates back to 2017, although he denies having a criminal record.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said Provincial Organised Crime detectives were tracking down accomplices.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Gqamana’s bail application was expected to be heard on 3 August.

July was a horrific month for “mass shootings”, which was initially thought to be a Cape Town extortion-related phenomenon.

One of the police’s breakthrough arrests was that of Yanga Nyalara in Cape Town, for a string of murders that police believe were related to extortion.

They hoped residents would have some peace of mind because the man – also known as “Bara” – was in custody, but the brief victory bubble burst when shocking scenes played out in other parts of the country.
