Parly Sanctions Fadiel Adams for Nonconsensual Publishing

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The National Coloured Congress (NCC) MP, Fadiel Adams, has been sanctioned by Parliament for placing the personal information of a Democratic Alliance (DA) staff member on social media without consent.

Adams is now required to apologise in the House and will have a significant portion of his salary docked after the DA lodged a complaint against him with Parliament’s Joint Ethics Committee.

The incident occurred after the DA voted against a motion tabled by Adams’ party earlier this year.

THE COMPLAINT

DA Chief Whip, George Michalakis, stated in his complaint that he had instructed a staff member to object to a Motion Without Notice circulated by the NCC.

According to the Joint Ethics Committee’s report, it then came to Michalakis’ attention that Fadiel Adams subsequently made a social media post on Facebook, which contained a screenshot of the email drafted by the staff member.

Michalakis noted that the email included the staff member’s personal details.

Michalakis further argued that the publication of the staff member’s personaldetails constituted an “assault on the staff member’s dignity, right to privacy and the right to have his personal information kept safe and secure.”

THE SANCTIONS

The Committee has now sanctioned Adams with a reprimand in the House and mandated that he must apologise in the House.

Furthermore, Adams will face the following penalties:

His salary and allowances will be reduced by an amount equal to 20 days.

The NCC leader will also be suspended from his seat in the parliamentary debates and committees for a period of 20 parliamentary days.
