Political Parties Skeptical Ahead of Joburg Budget Speech

Africa-Press – South-Africa. As the City of Johannesburg prepares to deliver its budget speech on Wednesday, some political parties remain sceptical that the metro will unveil a plan that prioritises the needs of the poor.

ActionSA, which has been working with the African National Congress (ANC)-led coalition government, has expressed strong doubts that it will be satisfied with Finance MMC Margaret Arnolds’ budget.

The party’s list of demands includes the scrapping of the R200 electricity surcharge and the insourcing of municipal workers.

But ActionSA’s council chief whip, Lebo Modukanene, is not optimistic these concerns will be addressed in the upcoming budget.

“So, because we are not agreeing on the fact that the surcharge is still there and the insourcing is not being included in this budget, we are not going to support this budget.”
