'Profound loss': Family of UK doctor murdered in Cape Town taxi strike appeals for witnesses

Africa-Press – South-Africa. In a bid to track down those who killed British doctor Kar Hao Teoh during a taxi strike in Cape Town last month, his family has appealed to witnesses to come forward with information.

Teoh was travelling on the N2 on 10 August, but he had to use an alternative route because protesting taxi operators blocked several roads. He ended up taking a wrong turn in the process and drove to a Nyanga informal settlement, where he was shot dead.

The British Consulate in Cape Town issued a statement on behalf of the family in which they stated their hope for justice.

“We hope that justice will be served so no one shall have to suffer such profound loss as we have,” the statement read.

They said they were “immensely touched and grateful” for the continued outpouring of love and support from friends, family, colleagues, patients and the wider community who knew Teoh.

The statement read:

The family was unable to comment on the events leading up to the murder because the investigation is ongoing.

“No arrests have been made yet. We appeal to any witnesses with information to contact 079 894 1466 (call/WhatsApp).”

A family member who did not want to be named said in the statement that Teoh found his independence from an early age.

“He was a brother to many and knitted families of people together with his unassuming and caring nature,” said the family member.

Professor Lew Schon from the USA, who previously worked with Teoh, said in the statement that they were blessed to work with him during his time at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore in 2018.

Schon said:

The family started a crowdfunding page to raise funds.

“All funds raised here will go directly towards supporting Mr. Kar Teoh’s family during this difficult time, helping them navigate the challenges ahead.

“Your generosity during this sorrowful time is a testament to the love and respect we all hold for Kar,” read a post on the page.

More than R1 million has been raised so far.

Western Cape police said they are still investigating the murder.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said no arrests have been made.

“The investigating officer is following up on all possible leads which could lead to a breakthrough in the case,” said Twigg.

He added that an appeal was made for anyone who has more information to call Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Police said Teoh’s body was flown back to his family shortly after he was killed.

Attempts to reach the family for comment have been unsuccessful.
