R8 000 fine for driver who steered Range Rover with his feet

Africa-Press – South-Africa. A Pretoria man who steered his red Range Rover with his feet has been found guilty of reckless driving.

Ikhalar Ul Haq, 39, caused a stir on social media last December when he was caught on camera climbing onto the vehicle’s roof while driving.

He was convicted in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on Friday and was sentenced to a fine of R8 000 or eight months’ imprisonment.

Road Traffic Management Corporation spokesperson Simon Zwane said Ul Haq paid the fine.

“His driving licence was suspended for six months,” Zwane added.

News24 previously reported that the national anti-corruption unit identified Ul Haq as a businessman from Marble Hall in Limpopo.

In the video, Ul Haq can be seen steering the vehicle using feet and arms while the vehicle swerves wildly across the road. He then climbs back into the vehicle as a truck approaches in the oncoming lane. He exits the vehicle one last time to blow kisses at the string of vehicles behind him.

Zwane said a concerned motorist who was driving along Moloto Road at the time filmed Ul Haq as his behaviour was reckless and placed the lives of other road users at risk.

“Driver behaviour, including reckless and negligent driving, is a major cause of accidents,” said Zwane.
