Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Hawks confiscated abalone worth more than R9 million during a bust in the Western Cape on Thursday. The bust is the second this week, bringing the total value of abalone seized to about R10.2 million.

Officers received a tip-off, which led them to a truck transporting illegal abalone on the N1 highway. The truck was kept under surveillance and later stopped and searched on Simondium Road in Klapmuts, said Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani.

“The team seized 30 520 units of dried abalone,” said Hani.

“The abalone was found hidden in false compartments. One suspect, aged 26, was arrested. The truck and abalone were seized for further investigation.”

On Wednesday morning, Western Cape police confiscated abalone valued at around R1.2 million in Delft. Police officers were patrolling the R300 when they noticed two suspicious vehicles.

Police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk said:

When the officers searched the vehicle, they found 14 black bags containing abalone on the backseat.

The second vehicle was pursued and caught further down the R300, added Van Wyk.

Two people were arrested.
