Tavern owner among 4 killed in Joburg shooting

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Four people, including a tavern owner, were shot dead in the Jerusalem informal settlement on Sunday morning.

It is alleged that a group of unknown individuals stormed into the tavern in the early hours and fired shots.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said: “One of the deceased is alleged to be the owner of the unlicensed liquor outlet, where the incident took place.”

The group fled the scene.

The ward councillor for Florida, Keke Tabane, told News24 that he received a call about the shooting early in the morning.

“I then got in contact with the police in the area and we went to the scene. When we arrived, the four bodies were still lying inside the tavern,” Tabane said.

He said residents were scared to divulge information about the shooting, but they gathered that three people were involved.

“We suspect that the perpetrators are members of the illegal miners. There are operations in the area, but they are not effective.”

Tabane said he had been concerned about illegal miners in the area.

“In our previous council meeting, I had raised concerns about the possibility of this type of retaliation, and that the zama zamas would take their frustrations out on innocent community members.”
