Africa-Press – South-Africa. Johannesburg Metropolitan Department (JMPD) officers arrested two men for allegedly being in possession of stolen copper cables valued at R3 million.

The two Cameroonian men, alleged to be in the country illegally, allegedly also tried to bribe the officials with a R10 000 bribe, and face more charges.

According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, officers apprehended the men after receiving information from a reliable source. He said the men were arrested after being found in possession of the stolen cables in Bramley.

It is still unclear as to where the two got the cables from, but Fihla said they told the police they received the cables from illegal miners.

“The suspects alleged to have received the copper from illegal miners who are Lesotho nationals, but they weren’t convincing,” Fihla said.

“They were charged with damage to infrastructure and possession of stolen copper and bribery,” Fihla said.

They were expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s court soon.
