Water woes: Another power outage at major pump station affects key Joburg reservoirs

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Johannesburg residents who are already grappling with water outages will again suffer because of a power trip at one of Rand Water’s major pumping stations.

The Zuikerbosch Water Treatment Plant outage on Thursday night has put more strain on the critical Commando System, which feeds the Hursthilll, Crosby and Brixton reservoirs, which are critically low.

According to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Nombuso Shabalala, an increase in demand and the power trip has further affected water supply to the key Johannesburg Water reservoirs.

“The Rand Water Eikenhof system is currently under tremendous strain, which in turn has affected the stability of certain reservoirs within the Johannesburg Water system,” said Shabalala.

She said the Brixton reservoir had to be isolated and or closed completely from Thursday evening until Friday morning to build up capacity to the reservoir.

The Crown Gardens reservoir is also critically low and had to be isolated on Thursday evening to build capacity.

Shabalala said:

Power trips are especially unfavourable because, according to former Johannesburg environment and infrastructure services MMC Michael Sun, for every second the system is down, it takes four hours to recover.

Meanwhile, a major pipe burst in Malanshof has resulted in no water or low water pressure in Malanshof, Boskruin, Strijdom Park, Sonnerglans, Randpark Ridge, Fountainbleu, parts of Langlaagte and Bromhof.
