Wynberg Magistrate’s Court shooting: Four men arrested in woman’s murder

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Police have arrested four suspects “positively” linked with the murder of a woman near the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court a week ago.

On Thursday 25 May, a woman en-route to the taxi rank was gunned down at about 10:45 on the corner of Church Street and Brodie Road.

Her identity has not yet been made public.

According to Western Cape police spokesperson Lt Col Malcolm Pojie, preliminary reports revealed that the woman had been walking in the street near the court when she had been approached by gunmen.

Opening fire, the gunmen shot the victim, leaving her to bleed on the street.

She was declared dead on the scene.Pojie says the investigation took the integrated investigation team to different locations within the Cape Metropole where they conducted a tracing operation and arrested four suspects “after they were positively linked with the murder through thorough investigation and forensic evidence”.

Police also seized a silver Nissan Tida and cellphones for analysis.

Following the shootings, rumours began to surface that the woman had been a state witness.

People’s Post checked with the police if this was the case, but no answer was provided.

Today, Pojie said that due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, no further detail would be divulged.

Shamila Nicholas, chair of Wynberg Cluster (CPF), says the suspects were arrested last night (Thursday 1 June).

“The detectives did a good job in arresting these guys so fast. We are grateful there was a speedy response and hope that the courts will also now play their part and not grant these suspects bail.”

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Reagen Allen says his ministry too welcomes the arrests.

“No person deserves to die in such a horrific manner. This heartless killing has been making the rounds on social media and I am pleased that the police acted in such a swift manner.”

Allen urges residents to desist from sharing this or any other related video footage online.

“Rather hand it over to the police so that it can be added to their body of evidence. It is important now that the individuals make a court appearance, as we do not want suspects to manoeuvre their way out of cases due to technicalities in court.”

The four suspects, aged between 24 and 33, are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 5 June, on a charge of murder.
