SSPDF Vehicle Ambush in Rumbek East Kills One Injures Four

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. One person was killed and four others wounded on Sunday night after a South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) Tiger Division vehicle was ambushed by unidentified gunmen in Rumbek East County, Lakes State.

The vehicle was traveling from Juba to Cueibet County when it came under attack in the Pacong area, according to state authorities.

Lakes State Acting Minister of Information and Communication, William Koji Kirjok, said the attackers opened fire on the vehicle, killing one person on the spot and critically injuring four others.

He added that some victims sustained additional injuries after jumping from the vehicle during the ambush.

Koji said the attackers later went on to terrorize residents in nearby homes the same night, during which a woman was shot dead while sleeping in her house.

“According to investigations and information obtained on the ground, the incident is related to revenge,” Koji said, adding that the assailants were moving from house to house calling out men, suggesting they were the intended targets.

He described the killing of the woman as unfortunate, saying she was shot through a window while the man the attackers were seeking was not at home.

The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the state hospital. Koji said security forces have been massively deployed to track down the attackers and deal with them accordingly.

He appealed to residents of Rumbek East and neighboring Wulu County to cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements.

Local leader Daniel Laat Kon condemned the attack in strong terms, describing it as a violation of public safety and the rule of law.

“People moving on the road should not be targets of any attack, whether for revenge or any other reason,” Kon said, calling on authorities to arrest those responsible and ensure they are held accountable.

He also urged the community to remain calm and allow the government to handle the matter, while wishing the injured a quick recovery.
