Africa-Press – South-Sudan. A senior diplomat says some suspects in corruption-related cases remain in detention without trial because court proceedings could expose others allegedly involved.
Speaking during the general election of the Lou Community Welfare Association in Juba, Ambassador Garang Deng Aguer said individuals accused of financial misconduct are being held in prison without their cases going to court.
He said the delays are tied to concerns that legal proceedings could reveal where the money went and who else may be involved.
“Those arrested in the prison now, that because they have stolen money.”
He said those detained had initially been instructed to mobilize funds but were later left to face the consequences alone.
“These are people who were called bring money. Now, they are stuck in the prison without anyone doing court trials, it’s because they know if the court trial is done, they are going to expose where the money has gone to.”
He added that neither prosecution nor release is taking place due to fears of further revelations.
“Now, they are not going to be punished or released. Because they know if the punishment is done, they are going to expose others and that’s why they are still in prison now.”
The ambassador urged the public to avoid acting on instructions from influential individuals to deliver money.
“So, my dear, this issue of saying, big person has called you that bring me money, you people should stop it’’.
His remarks come amid ongoing public discussion about accountability, due process, and the handling of corruption-related cases in the country.
