Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Governor of Jonglei State, Dr. Riek Gai Kok, on Friday presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Dr. Agot Alier, the newly appointed Mayor of Bor town, in an event held at the State Secretariat to mark a transition in the leadership of the Municipal Council.
Agot was appointed on Thursday evening through a gubernatorial decree, replacing Achiek Machar Ayuen, who has served as mayor in recent years. His appointment is seen as part of broader efforts by the state government to strengthen local governance and accelerate development in the state capital.
In his keynote address, Gai charged the new mayor with the responsibility of addressing Bor’s pressing developmental challenges, urging him to lead with integrity, dedication, and vision, stressing that effective service delivery was at the heart of his administration’s priorities.
“Public service is public trust,” the governor said. “You are assuming office at a time when this administration is committed to delivering robust, inclusive, and enduring development. I therefore urge you to be dedicated and result-oriented, for it is through such efforts that we can build a worthy legacy for Jonglei State.”
Taking the oath of office, Agot expressed his gratitude to the governor for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to faithfully implement the state government’s reform agenda and work closely with stakeholders to improve service delivery in Bor.
“The charge you have given me shall be carried out to the letter, with your continued support. I am committed to serving the people of Bor with dedication, transparency, and accountability,” he affirmed.
Outgoing mayor Achiek Machar, in his farewell remarks, reminded his successor that public office is temporary but service to the people must remain a lasting priority. He encouraged Dr. Agot to build on the foundation already laid, ensuring continuity in municipal governance.
