Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Other Political Parties (OPP), a grouping of political parties that signed the 2018 revitalized peace agreement, has said it is not part of the call by People’s Liberal Party (PLP) leader Peter Mayen Majongdit’s call for dialogue to salvage the South Sudan peace process.
Last Friday, Mayen unveiled the “Juba Initiative of the Parties,” claiming it was a call by the OPP for dialogue among signatories of the peace agreement. He said his group would spearhead dialogue to find solutions.
“So, we do respect any grievances each and every party may have, including us,” he stated in a press release dated 13 June, “We will table our grievances and dialogue on what needs to be done on the implementation of the agreement until elections.”
Mayen urged the region and international community to help parties address issues before elections.
However, in a twist of events, the leadership of the Other Political Parties (OPP), in a Tuesday press release, said Mayen’s statements do not represent their position.
“The leadership of the OPP has learned with concern of the recent public statements made by Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, through various media outlets since 13 June, 2025. These statements, presented under the label of the so-called ‘Urgent Call for Dialogue to Salvage South Sudan’s Peace Process’ claim to represent the views and position of the OPP,” the statement reads in part. “Therefore, the leadership of the OPP, categorically condemn and reject these claims and wish to clarify the following to the parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS), to our political stakeholders, and the public that OPP firmly distances itself from the statements and activities of Hon. Peter Mayen Majongdit.”
“He (Mayen) is not a representative of the OPP and has no authority to speak or act on its behalf. We urge all parties to the R-ARCSS, as well as the national and international communities, to take note that Hon. Mayen Majongdit is no longer associated with the leadership of the OPP,” the statement added.
The OPP leadership said their position on the Nasir incident has been very clear and that they unequivocally condemned the violence and the incident that occurred there.
“OPP called for immediate accountability and demanded that the government take all necessary steps to restore law and order in the affected areas,” the statement said. “OPP reaffirmed its full commitment to the implementation of the R-ARCSS and reiterated that the peace agreement remains the only viable path to achieving South Sudan’s first general elections. At no point has the OPP referred to any political actors as ‘peace spoilers,’ including Hon. Dr. Martin Elia Lomuro, the Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Principal of National Agenda of Political Parties, nor has OPP made any reference to political detainees.”
The OPP called for the urgent review of Chapter Two of the R-ARCSS to fast-track the integration of all necessary forces under a single unified command, led by one Commander-in-Chief, ahead of the general elections.
“OPP urges the public to remain calm and focused on the implementation of the peace agreement, which remains active and binding,” the statement reads. “For clarity, the OPP has never had a leader by the name of Peter Mayen Majongdit. His claims to leadership or representation of the OPP are false and misleading.
The OPP leadership clarified that Mayen is one of the six signatories of the OPP to the R-ARCSS.
“However, his (Mayen’s) own party, the People’s Liberal Party (PLP), a member party under the Umbrella of Political Parties, dismissed him and was subsequently disowned by the same (Umbrella of Political Parties whom he signed on their behalf),” the statement elucidated. “As a result, he also lost his standing and membership within the OPP. Therefore, Hon. Mayen Majondit has no authority or legitimacy to speak or act on behalf of the OPP, and any actions taken or statements made by him in the name of the OPP must be disregarded in totality.”
The OPP said it remains committed to peace, stability, and the full implementation of the R-ARCSS.
“We call on all stakeholders to stand united against disinformation and unauthorized initiatives that risk undermining the hard-won progress toward lasting peace in South Sudan,” the statement concluded.
