Africa-Press – South-Sudan. The Office of the Chief Administrator of Ruweng Administrative Area has downplayed claims of corruption and impeachment against Chief Administrator Stepheno Wieu De Mialek, labelling them as “baseless propaganda”.
The statement follows Tuesday’s reports alleging that Wieu was impeached by the Ruweng Transitional Legislative Council after he was accused of gross misconduct tied to rampant insecurity and widespread corruption in a decision championed by Speaker Arop Kok Kiir.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Chief Administrator’s Press Unit condemned the reports as a “pure lie” intended to tarnish the reputation of Mr. Wieu.
The statement clarified that no impeachment proceedings have taken place, emphasising that impeachment is a regulated institutional process requiring a formal council session, debate, and a vote with an appropriate quorum. “Impeachment is not a unilateral decision without due process,” the statement read.
The initial report indicated that Wieu was accused of failing to curb the rampant insecurity that has gripped the region, with frequent killings of citizens casting a dark shadow over his administration.
Wieu is accused of diverting 5% of the region’s oil revenue—a critical resource for the oil-rich Ruweng Administrative Area—to his account and that of Mary Ayen Mijok. Similarly, revenue from Personal Income Tax and Murram, a local resource, allegedly found its way into the same accounts, bypassing public coffers.
However, in the letter, his office further defended the Chief Administrator, asserting that Wieu, who was appointed in April 2025, is “free of corruption” and remains committed to serving the interests of the people of Ruweng Administrative Area.
The statement called on the public to disregard the reports, which claimed that Wieu was also accused of refusing to cooperate, creating a governance vacuum that hindered progress, frustrating the Legislative Council and prompting Kiir, through Vice President Benjamin Bol Mel, to swiftly implement the alleged impeachment and appoint a new Chief Administrator.
