VP Igga warns of ‘serious competition’ during upcoming elections

Africa-Press – South-Sudan. South Sudan’s Vice-President for Economic Cluster Dr. James Wani Igga has warned members of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) led by President Salva Kiir Mayardit saying elections slated for end of the current transitional period will be competitive that will be hard to win if the SPLM do not prepare.

Based on the revitalized peace agreement, South Sudan is to organize its first-ever elections since gaining independence from Sudan in 2011. The elections, according to the 2018 peace agreement signed by President Salva Kiir and his first deputy Dr. Riek Machar Teny of the SPLM-IO, the transitional period of 36 months should end in 2022.

But President Kiir’s office has reportedly pushed the conduct of elections to 2023 without the consent of other peace partners such as the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) and the SPLM Former Detainees.

Speaking on Tuesday in Juba while addressing members of the ruling SPLM party at the Central Equatoria state party secretariat, Igga said the ruling party need to prepare for the elections which he said will be competitive given the huge number of political organizations that have emerged since outbreak of war in 2013.

“We are here to give more energy to the SPLM in this host state and host to the national government and of course because have to re-energized the SPLM because there is a serious competition going to come and it’s not a joke,” Igga told a large group of cheering SPLM supporters.

“And because of this remarkable and spectacular gathering I want to say that the goal will include proving to Central Equatoria State and South Sudan at large that indeed we are re-jubilate the moral,” he added.
