Africa-Press – Tanzania. IN a bid to address incidents of violence against children, women, people with disabilities, the elderly, and other vulnerable groups, the government of Tanzania has established special desks in all public institutions.
These desks are intended to provide a safe space for victims to report abuse so that immediate legal action can be taken.
This announcement was made today, April 24, 2025, in Parliament in Dodoma by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa while responding to a question from a Special Seats Member of Parliament, Stella Fyao.
The MP had inquired about the government’s strategy to set up dedicated units in schools, colleges, community levels, offices, and other areas to address acts of violence occurring in those environments.
“We continue to witness incidents of violence against children, women, the elderly, persons with disabilities, and various groups within our society. The Government has established systems to significantly reduce such violence,” said Prime Minister Majaliwa.
He explained that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has created a special ministry to handle matters related to gender, children, women, and special groups, to oversee efforts to reduce and ultimately eliminate violence against these groups.
“We have developed a system to set up special desks in all public institutions, including primary and secondary schools, vocational training centers, and universities. These desks provide an opportunity for anyone experiencing abuse to report it, and once a report is made, strict action is taken against the perpetrators,” the Prime Minister added.
Additionally, he called on the public to work closely together in reporting and preventing acts of violence against all vulnerable groups, emphasizing that everyone should be their neighbour’s keeper.
