Africa-Press – Tanzania. FISH production has more than doubled from 38,107 tons in 2020 to 78,943 tonnes in 2024, with increased earnings from 205bn/- to 618bn/- during the period, the House of Representatives heard here yesterday.
Blue Economy and Fishing Minister Shaaban Ali Othman told the house that fish demand in the islands is highly growing as a result of domestic consumption and the expansive tourist sector, which is projected to grow faster and host over 800,000 tourists in 2025.
The minister was answering a question by Wawi Representative Bakar Hamad Bakar who sought to know the rate of fish production in the islands compared to the growing demand.
Minister Shaaban informed the house that there is a growing awareness of the fishing industry in the country, citing various areas where wananchi have embarked on fish farming.
He assured that the government, through the Ministry of Fishery, will continually invest adequately in the requisite infrastructure and public awareness campaigns on fishery
