Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Hussein Mwinyi has urged Tanzanians to continue praying for peace as the country moves closer to the general election, stressing that national stability remains the foundation for sustainable development.
“Whenever I get the opportunity to speak to the public, I will continue drumming for peace and stability because it is the only way we can guarantee achieving development,” Dr Mwinyi said on Sunday as he addressed mourners during a special prayer (dua) for the late Salim Turky.
The prayer ceremony was held at the family’s residence located in Mpendae, Urban District, in Zanzibar’s Urban West Region.
The late Turky, who died four years ago, was widely respected for his contributions to Zanzibar’s marine transport sector and industrial development.
He also served as the Member of Parliament for Mpendae constituency, where he was known as a committed leader who worked tirelessly for his people.
In his remarks, Dr Mwinyi encouraged the youth, especially the children of the late Turky, to continue praying for their parents and elders as a gesture of love, remembrance and moral responsibility.
He said such acts strengthen family bonds and preserve the legacy of those who played important roles in the nation’s development.
The President also underscored the importance of safeguarding unity and warned against divisive statements that could jeopardise the peace Zanzibar has worked hard to achieve.
He noted that over the past five years, the Isles has experienced relative calm and socio-economic progress, which must not be compromised.
“For five years, Zanzibar has enjoyed peace and progress. We must not allow ourselves to be dragged back into the chaos of the past. Without peace, there can be no development,” he said.
Dr Mwinyi expressed concern over recent political rhetoric from some quarters, saying such remarks could potentially provoke unrest in the lead-up to the elections.
He called upon citizens to remain vigilant and to prioritise harmony over political divisions. Speaking during the ceremony, the late Salim Turky’s son, Taufiq Turky, who currently serves as the Member of Parliament for Mpendae expressed his family’s gratitude to President Mwinyi for honouring the memory of their late father.
He also thanked the government for the ongoing development in the constituency, including the expansion of road infrastructure and the construction of new schools, which he said reflect the leadership’s commitment to uplifting the lives of residents.
