Africa-Press – Tanzania. STRONG diplomatic relations and development cooperation between Tanzania and Canada continue to deliver significant progress in the health sector, particularly in strengthening primary healthcare services across the country.
This was highlighted by Tanzania’s Minister for Health, Jenista Mhagama, after welcoming Canada’s Minister of International Development, Randeep Sarai, along with his delegation, who arrived in Tanzania for a five-day official visit.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to the Government of Canada for its continued partnership in developing Tanzania’s health sector, especially through its contribution to the Health Basket Fund,” said Minister Mhagama.
“This fund supports the improvement of primary healthcare services through direct funding to health facilities in the first phase of implementation (2022–2027).”

Minister Mhagama noted that Tanzania has been working closely with Canada to enhance reproductive health services, adolescent sexual and reproductive rights, and maternity care efforts aimed at reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by increasing the availability of skilled birth attendants.
“The Tanzania–Canada collaboration in the health sector has led to major milestones, including a reduction in under-five child mortality from 67 per 1,000 live births in 2015 to 43 in 2022, and a drop in maternal mortality from 556 to 104 per 100,000 live births,” she explained.
However, she acknowledged the slow decline in neonatal deaths, which only decreased slightly from 25 to 24 per 1,000 live births between 2015 and 2022. She used the opportunity to call on Canada to continue supporting Tanzania in implementing targeted health interventions to address this challenge.
In response, Canada’s Minister of International Development, Randeep Sarai, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to continued support, particularly in the health sector.
