Africa-Press – Tanzania. MINISTER for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has revealed that Tanzania has already signed 22 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with different countries aimed at strengthening cooperation in sports development, as the nation steps up preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027.

Makonda made the remarks recently in Arusha during an inspection tour of various development projects in the city, as Tanzania intensifies readiness for the continental football showpiece that will be co-hosted by three East African nations – Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

Speaking about the signed MoUs, Makonda said the agreements were facilitated through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation and are designed to boost collaboration in areas such as talent development, sports exchange programmes, training and capacity building.

He emphasised that the agreements will not remain on paper, stressing his personal commitment to visiting partner countries to ensure Tanzania benefits fully from the cooperation.

“I will make sure I visit the countries that have partnered with Tanzania in sports matters, so that we attract them and work closely together to develop the many talents we have in our country,” Makonda said.

The minister noted that sports diplomacy is becoming a key pillar in national development, especially as Tanzania prepares to host one of Africa’s biggest football tournaments.

He added that such partnerships will play a vital role in preparing athletes, coaches and administrators ahead of AFCON 2027.

Beyond sports, Makonda also highlighted Tanzania’s growing cultural influence on the global stage. He disclosed that later this year, Tanzania will host a major international Kiswahili conference in France, with the Tanzanian government serving as the main organiser.

“This year, there will be a major Kiswahili language conference in France, and the Government of Tanzania will be the chief organiser, with our ministry taking the lead role,” he explained.

During his Arusha visit, Makonda inspected several strategic projects, including construction of a new stadium, stand and a modern market, both seen as key infrastructure that will support AFCON 2027 activities and enhance the city’s readiness to host international visitors.

He also spoke about the ongoing plans to construct a new Mount Meru Hospital building, revealing that a 10-storey structure will be equipped with modern medical facilities to improve healthcare services in the region.

With AFCON 2027 fast approaching, Makonda’s proactive approach underlines a renewed focus on early preparations, international cooperation and grassroots development.

His vision positions sports not only as a game, but as a powerful tool for unity, diplomacy and national pride, potentially reshaping the future of Tanzanian football.
