Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Deputy Minister for Agriculture, David Silinde has represented Tanzania at the Private Sector Engagement Summit on Sustainable Food Trade and Investment in Africa, held in Nairobi, Kenya.
The summit jointly organised by the OECD and the government of Kenya and opened by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Information, Communication and Digital Economy, William Kabogo focused on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies to address climate and water challenges in Africa’s agriculture sector.
At the summit, Mr Silinde highlighted Tanzania’s initiatives, including the digital registration of farmers, management of input subsidies, and agricultural data systems.
Elaborating, he said that AI has enabled the government to forecast production trends, market demand, and trade information.
He also said that it has helped farmers plan production and sales efficiently.
Moreover, he said that integrating AI with weather data from the Tanzania Meteorological Authority allowed early warning systems for droughts and floods, enhancing resilience and strategic planning for farmers.
Moreover, the minister also showcased Tanzania’s streamlined licensing systems in agriculture, which have simplified trade processes for stakeholders both domestically and internationally, reinforcing the country’s commitment to digital innovation in the sector.
Participants at the summit included former Nigerian Vice President, agriculture ministers from across Africa and Romania, as well as investors from the European Union.
