MINISTER of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled), Antony Mavunde wants the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (Osha) to invest more in public awareness to make people understand how to protect themselves in the workplace.

Mr Mavunde noted that many people were still unaware of matters concerning safety in the workplace.

The minister was speaking at a meeting of workers’ council of Osha at the weekend in Arusha Region.

Meanwhile, Mr Mavunde told the management of Osha to continue building the capacity of its staff to enable them to discharge their duties more efficiently.

He said Osha had a major role to play in industrial economy in the country by building the capacity of its workers so that they effectively inspected industries to avoid safety and health risks.

“There have been a lot of technological changes that we need to keep our professionals up-to-date by developing their skills. This will definitely make them improve performance and thus result in more efficiency in production,” he noted.

However, he commended Osha for inspecting the workplace and called for more efforts to serve Tanzanians.

For her part, Osha Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Hadija Mwenda said one of the issues discussed during the meeting was a draft of a five-year strategic plan for the institute for 2020/21-2024/25.

The objectives of the proposed strategic plan are to register more places of work and ensure they meet safety and health standards.

“As we approach the end of a strategic plan for 2019/20, we thought it was important to evaluate to identify challenges that could be addressed in the coming strategic plan,” she said.
