HEALTH, SAFETY AT WORKPLACES FOR DISABLED STRESSED

AfricaPress-Tanzania: THE government has stressed the need to educate people with disabilities on health and safety regulations at workplaces to make the group more productive for the national economy.

The Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Policy, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour, Employment, Youth and the Disabled), Ms Stella Ikupa made the statement when she opened training on health and safety at workplaces for people with disabilities in Rufiji district, Coast region.

The deputy minister said the government recognises the contribution from the group to the country’s socio-economic development, thus it would continue empowering them by ensuring a friendly environment for production through public institutions such as Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA).

The OSHA organized the training for people with disabilities in the district to equip them with the knowledge to avoid possible accidents at workplaces.

“The government through its entities such as OSHA and in partnership with various stakeholders will continue providing various trainings, such as health and security at workplaces. We will also empower them economically by finding markets for their goods and ensure that there are enabling
environment,” the deputy minister stated.

Ms Ikupa insisted that the training to different groups on self-protection against risks at workplaces was crucial in enabling them to work at safe places.

Commenting, OSHA Acting Chief Executive Officer Khadija Mwenda said the training was part of the authority’s strategy to reach out to various social groups in providing the knowledge that will
make them conduct their activities while adhering to health and safety regulations.

“This is not the first time for us to conduct such training to people with disabilities. We
have done this in other regions like Kagera and Dar es Salaam. Let me assure you that these trainings will be ongoing in several parts of the country,” Ms Mwenda noted.

Some participants of the training commended the authority for organizing the training to social groups with special needs.
