AfricaPress-Tanzania: ARUSHA regional authorities have appealed to employers to cooperate with the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (Osha) in implementing occupational safety guidelines. Regional Administrative Secretary (RAS) Richard Kwitega made an appeal at the weekend during training organised by Osha for employers in the region.

He was representing the regional commissioner at the event. Training is part of Osha’s campaign called ‘vision zero’, which aimed at eradicating occupational accidents.

Mr Kwitega further said employees also had a role to play when it came to occupational safety and health. “Occupational safety involves the employer, an employee and the government and if cooperation between them is heightened, accidents and diseases will be reduced,” he argued.

He told workers to develop a culture of protecting themselves while at work because they plaid a crucial role in protecting themselves against diseases and accidents.

The administrative secretary further noted that the employers should put in place sophisticated systems in their workplace that would guarantee the safety of their workers.

Osha Director of Safety and Health, Alex Ngata, who spoke on behalf of Osha Chief Executive Officer, Khadija Mwenda said the ‘vision zero’ was a global campaign.

“An employee is a fundamental pillar at any business or production and Osha ensures that their safety and health is guaranteed to protect the country’s labour force,” Mr Ngata stated.

For their part, some participants admitted that the campaign would help them put in place better systems for protecting the workers against accidents in the workplace.

“If an employer abides by what the ‘vision zero’ requires and follows directives from Osha, there is a high chance of increasing production in the workplace and increase national revenue,” said Mr Emmanuel Mvamila, a representative from TPC Limited.
