Africa-Press – Tanzania. A TOTAL of 12,000 girls who had dropped out of secondary schools due to early pregnancies will have a second chance to pursue formal education.

This is in the wake of the World Bank (WB) funded project of Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project- Alternative Education Pathway (SEQUIP-AEP).

SEQUIP-AEP project is being implemented by the Institute of Adult Education (IAE) under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology in collaboration of Regional Administration and Local government ministry.

The project will enrol the girls in batches for four years, whereby the first batch of 3000 dropouts will be enrolled next year.

Chairperson of the Council of the Institute of Adult Education, Dr Naomi Katunzi on Thursday underscored the need for regional resident tutors to ensure smooth implementation of SEQUIP-AEP so that it attains its desired goals.

Dr Katunzi said the regional resident tutors must ensure that the project reach the 12,000 girls within the four years’ duration.

She said the SEQUIP-AEP project to start from 2022 to 2025 aims to enroll 3,000 girls for alternative education pathway every year during the four-year existence of the project.

Dr Katunzi said during training to tutors that IAE will continuously design, develop and deliver accessible quality life-long education programmes through blended learning for sustainable social-economic development.

The five-day training, she said, intends to equip the regional resident tutors with the needed knowledge and skills for close monitoring and supervision during the project implementation.

“Regional resident tutors are the implementers of the SEQUIP-AEP project, you must be well versed with the details so that in due time, you must be guided by professionalism and accountability in running the project in your respective regions in identifying and registering the girls” said Dr Katunzi.

On his part, IAE Director cum Rector, Dr Michael Ng’umbi said they have set the needed groundwork for the project to take off, with most of the preparations being at an advanced stage.

He said facilitation guidelines, subject summary and modules, and construction permits are ready.

Dr Ng’umbi said regional resident tutors are key actors in the project implementation, therefore they must go directly at their duty stations after the training to implement the plans.

Speaking during the training, Vice Chairperson of the Institute of Adult Education, Prof Sotco Komba said implementation of the project needed concerted efforts to attain the goals to empower and support girls to excel in life.

The project aims to support girls between 13 and 20 years who dropped out of school due to various reasons by providing them with secondary education.
