Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE government has commenced implementation of a major water supply project worth 220.8bn/- in Morogoro Municipality, marking a significant step toward ending the long-standing challenge of water shortages in the fastgrowing town.
The National Assembly was informed on Thursday by Deputy Minister for Water, Mr Mathew Kundo, while responding to a basic question from Morogoro Urban MP Abdul-Aziz Mohamed Abood (CCM).
In his question, the MP sought clarification on when the long-awaited water project valued at over 185bn/- would begin, noting that residents of Morogoro continue to grapple with severe water scarcity.
Responding, Mr Kundo said one of the core components of the project is the construction of a major water treatment and production plant with a daily capacity of 54 million litres. The facility will be built at Mafiga area.
He said the contract for the construction of the plant was signed on January 19 this year and the implementation is expected to take 24 months.
“This project is part of the government’s broader strategy to ensure the people of Morogoro access reliable and sustainable water services,” he said.
Mr Kundo said the project also includes raising the embankments of Mindu Dam to increase its depth by 2.5 metres, a move expected to expand the dam’s storage capacity.
Additionally, the scope of work covers the installation of 372 kilometres of pipelines and the construction of four water storage tanks with a combined capacity of nine million litres.
The tanks will be built in Lukobe, Bigwa, Kipera and Magereza to strengthen water distribution across Morogoro Municipality.
“At present, the government is finalising procurement procedures for contractors who will execute the remaining components of the project,” he added
