Arusha set for new look as hawkers relocate

Africa-Press – Tanzania. Arusha residents will on Monday wake up to a slightly tweaked city’s outlook, as petty traders and hawkers take up their new designated areas.

This follows a directive from the Arusha regional commissioner John Mongella to the petty traders after the completion of the construction of their new stalls.

Speaking shortly after touring the new trading spaces put in place in different parts of the city, Mr Mongella said the traders should stay put, as they wait to be relocated to their new cubicles.

The regional commissioner pointed out further that the construction of the stalls had been complete in some parts of the city, saying he wasn’t expecting to see any petty traders refusing to be relocated.

“The waiting is now over, you’ll by Monday (today) expected to take up your new trading spaces , which I believe will be your permanent stalls,” said the regional commissioner.

Detailing on the relocation, Mr Mongella said the Engutoto block E will house welders and furniture sellers, while Mbauda area will host sellers of second-hand clothes.

The Machame Luxury area will now host sellers of electronic appliances, while the Ulezi block will now house special clothes traders.

According to the regional commissioner, the disputed Kilombero blokc 68 area, will now be home to hawkers and traders engaged in the sale of different food products.

“This new arrangement will not include shop owners,” he said.

City Director John Pima on his part assured the petty traders and hawkers that the new arrangement will not affect their businesses but rather improve their ways of doing business, far from harassment of city lords.
