Africa-Press – Tanzania. Azam Caretaker Coach Kali Ongala has lauded his players for an away 1-0 win over Polisi Tanzania at Ushirika Stadium in Moshi on Monday.
Ayoub Lyanga’s 15th-minute goal secured Azam FC maximum points and elevated them to second place with 35 points in 15 games, behind Young Africans, who are points similar but superior by goal difference.
At third are Simba SC, who wrapped their first-half round with 34 points.
After the encounter, Ongala spoke with journalists and noted: “I am proud of my players; it was not an easy game; Polisi Tanzania has a good team.”
Apart from applauding his players, he highlighted he had seen few faults from his players; therefore, he will sit with his technical bench and improve the squad as the journey is still long.
Azam has had the best performance recently, winning five straight games.
Commenting on the quality of his squad, Ongala said: “We have an excellent team, with plenty of players; some have not played yet. We are still deciding if we shall get new players in the transfer window.
“Our focus is to fight in each game and win as the journey has yet to be completed; more games are coming.”
His counterpart, Polisi Tanzania Assistant Coach John Tamba, told ‘Daily News’ it was sad they lost, but his players worked hard to bring glory to their fans but failed.
“I thank God we played well but lost by one goal. However, our side did fight well; they showed a great spirit.
“We hope to work hard, as the second round will begin shortly. On the transfer window, where necessary, we shall have to bring new players to strengthen our squad.”
The two sides fought well, but an early Lyanga header from a well-calculated cross from Pascal Msindo ended the hosts Polisi Tanzania’s hope despite their attempts to pull back.
In another development, Ruvu Shooting coach Charles Mkwasa has resigned due to bad results in the Tanzania Mainland Premier League.
Mkwasa has said that he has decided to give other people a chance to continue where he left off while leaving the team in the 15th position, which is second from the bottom.
“Maybe my philosophy has failed to work, so I am departing to give the opportunity to someone else to take charge,” said Mkwasa.
