Africa-PressTanzania. TANZANIAN envoys in CAF Champions League, Simba have been placed in group A, together with the team’s familiar opponents; Al Ahly of Egypt and AS Vita of Democratic Republic of Congo, who were also in the same group with Simba in the 2018-19 season.

The other team in the group are the Sudanese champions El Merreikh of Sudan, the second team from CECAFA Zone after Simba. The group stage draw was conducted yesterday at CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The envoys are grouped together with other giants, such as Al Ahly Sporting Club of Egypt, Al-Merrikh Sporting Club of Sudan and Association Sportive Vita Club (AS Vita) of Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The teams in group B are CR Belouizdad of Algeria, Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa, El Hilal of Sudan and TP Mazembe of DRC.

Group C comprises Horoya Athletic Club of Guinea, Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa, Petro de Luanda of Angola and Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco.

Group D is dominated by North African teams; Espérance Sportive de Tunisia and Mouloudia Club of Algeria, Teungueth of Senegal and Zamalek of Egypt.

CAF also released a fixture of the CAF Confederation Cup in which Tanzanian envoys Namungo FC will play against C.D. Primeiro de Agosto of Angola.

Meanwhile, Simba yesterday began their Mapinduzi Cup campaign with a bright colour after defeating Chipukizi 3-1 at Amani Stadium in Zanzibar.

Simba’s goals were netted by Medie Kagere, Miraj Athumani and Gadiel Michael, while Chipukizi scored their consolation through Salum Suleiman.

Chipukizi netted the opening goal through their striker Salum Suleiman in 36th minute of the game. It took nine minutes for Simba to equalise when Medie Kagere headed home, completing David Kameta’s set piece.

The half time ended with a score sheet reading 1-1. Six minutes after the second half Miraj Athumani netted the second for his club completing Kagere’s long ball.

Gadiel Michael sealed off the goal account by netting the third in the 83rd minute. After yesterday’s victory Simba will be back on the arena to face Mtibwa Sugar in their second game of the tournament at the same venue.

The match is expected to be fierce as both sides have a pocketed one win. Mtibwa won the first match by beating Chipukizi 1-0; Mtibwa’s goal was netted by Ibrahim Ahmada in the 58th minute.
