Africa-Press – Tanzania. Nigeria’s Super Eagles have suffered a setback ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has been officially ruled out of the continental showpiece.
Agu, 26, recently underwent surgery after sustaining a syndesmosis ligament injury during Werder Bremen’s 1-0 Bundesliga victory over St. Pauli last month.
The injury had already forced him to miss Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Lesotho and Benin Republic.
Initially, medical reports suggested that Agu could be sidelined for about two months, raising faint hopes of a return before the AFCON. However, Bremen’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, has now confirmed that the defender will not return to action until next year.
“His (Agu) return will definitely not take place until the new year,” Niemeyer told German outlet DeichStube.
Agu, who previously represented Germany at youth level before pledging his international future to Nigeria, has made just one appearance for the Super Eagles since completing his nationality switch.
His absence is expected to pose a selection dilemma for Super Eagles head coach Finidi George, who will now have to look elsewhere to fill the left-back position ahead of the AFCON and Nigeria’s crucial World Cup playoff clash with Gabon.
The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations will kick off in Morocco next summer, with Nigeria aiming to capture a fourth continental title.
