Finance Minister Affirms Role in Zanzibar's Economic Goals

Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR’S newly appointed Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr Juma Malik Akil, has pledged to build on the foundations laid by his predecessors to ensure the financial sector remains stable, efficient and strongly aligned with the country’s economic goals.

Speaking shortly after the official handover ceremony from outgoing minister Dr Saada Mkuya Salum at the ministry offices in Vuga, Dr Akil said the ministry carries a “critical responsibility” in steering the national economy.

He stressed that his leadership will focus on strengthening revenue sources to protect the financial system from shocks.

“We have a major responsibility to safeguard the economy and ensure our revenue streams remain stable. This will be a key priority,” he said.

Dr Akil emphasised that the ministry’s collective task is to support government development targets while keeping the financial sector strong and beneficial to citizens. “Together, we must help the government achieve its goals and maintain strong performance,” he added.

He highlighted the importance of continuing to allocate funds to the national debt repayment fund, which currently holds around 350m US dollars.

“As President Hussein Ali Mwinyi has said, he does not want to leave behind a heavy debt burden. We now have about 350m US dollars set aside for repaying project-related loans.”
