Golf Africa heads for new dawn in 2022

Africa-PressTanzania. AFTER failing to tee off in the past three years, All Africa golf tournaments are set to officially resume from next year.

The tournament which includes the All Challenge Africa Golf tournament, All Africa Juniors Challenge and East Africa Region Four have not been staged since 2019 due to the coronavirus threat.

The Tanzania Golf Association (TGU) Competition Secretary Enock Magile said this week that the Africa Golf Confederation has already announced the tournament should officially start next year regardless of the coronavirus situation.

Magile said the African golf body concedes that they should learn how to live with that and ensure that the competitions resume so as to continue with the continental development projects.

He said the federation was committed to finding the best way to run the competition in an environment that is not dangerous to the participants.

In that context, he says, for the second year now TGU has not selected the national team, but has now started a process of building the national team as well as a junior national team.

He said they are planning to use local competitions to select these teams and have started giving out Order of Merit points starting from the just ended Morogoro Open 2021 competition held at the Gymkhana Morogoro Club.

Magile said Morogoro Open 2021 tournament champion Seif Mcharo from TPC Moshi Club leads the way in the order of merit with 20 points, while second place is taken by George Sembi also from Kilimanjaro with 18 points.

According to Magile, 10 players have been awarded points in the tournament. Other earners are Emanuel Juma of Morogoro (16), Isaac Daudi of Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo club course of Dar es Salaam (14), Peter Bonzo of Morogoro (12), Likuli Juma of Lugalo (10).

Others are Godfrey Leverian of Morogoro (8), Damas Gaitana (6), Kileo (4) and Godfrey Gwacha of Moshi 2 points.

He advised the players to participate in various national level competitions in order to accumulate important points to earn a chance to represent the nation in international competitions next year.

He commended Morogoro Gymkhana for its excellent work in organising the competition and he said it has been one of the catalysts for the emergence of talented golfers in the country.

Magile added that after the Morogoro Open, the national level competition expected to follow and that is Lugalo Open. He urged players to prepare for the competition.

He said TGU aims to form strong teams so they rely on every player’s effort to increase his playing skill.
