Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa has assured the National Assembly that the government has put in place strategic plans to ensure river basins contribute positively to key productive sectors such as energy, agriculture and livestock.
He said the government has established basin authorities to monitor water flow and management in the areas.
“We have established river basin authorities to monitor water flow in these areas, and to take prompt action if any section poses a threat,” said the Prime Minister yesterday while responding to a question from Kyela MP, Ally Jumbe (CCM) during a parliamentary Question and Answer session to him.
Mr Jumbe sought clarification on the government’s strategy to control floods caused by overflowing river basins during the rainy season, which often affects nearby communities.
PM Majaliwa stated that the government’s plans are to utilize the basins effectively by expanding the potential of productive sectors.
As part of this effort, budget allocations for the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock will be increased to support the implementation of flood control systems and establish irrigation infrastructure that will allow communities to benefit economically from the water resources.
In a related matter, Moshi Urban MP Jacob Tarimo (CCM) raised concerns about the increasing number of public servants moving to other institutions in search of better benefits.
He asked what measures the government is taking to ensure fair salaries and benefits across the public sector.
In response, the Premier said that the public service is coordinated by the Ministry of Public Service Management, along with the Prime Minister’s Office for Employment and Labour, which works to ensure employees receive fair compensation.
“However, we do not prevent employees from seeking better opportunities. One can receive better benefits depending on their level of education. We have also set a minimum wage to ensure that employees meet their basic needs,” he explained.
He added that the government is working with trade unions and employers to review and improve employee benefits in both the public and private sectors.
“The government will continue to advocate for employee benefits that ensure they can meet their daily needs,” he said.
