Grape farmers urged to increase production

Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Dodoma Regional Commissioner Anthony Mtaka has called upon entrepreneurs, processors and grape farmers to embark on massive production in expanding their businesses within the East Africa Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) market.

The Acting Dodoma Regional Administrative Secretary, Ms Aziza Mumba, disclosed this while officiating at a workshop organized by the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) in the Central Region on behalf of the RC.

Mr Mtaka urged them to concentrate on acquiring huge productivity which will cater for both the local and external market aside other crucial factors including issues relating processing and packaging.

“This training should act as a guiding tool for you to focus on more production … We know for a fact that some of our neighbors in the EAC and SADC region do not engage in grape production, so let’s work hard to make use of the opportunity,” said Mr Mtaka.

The RC noted that the training will also help processors and packers to complement government efforts in ensuring that the grape industry and its products contribute to the output of individual prospects and boost the national economy.

He said the sixth phase government is determined to increase grape production and be among the strategic crops to increase their value and increase output.

Mtaka appealed to participants that the country has attained a middle-income status thus the training should be a catalyst for continued hard work in order to promote economic growth .

TBS Central Regional Manager, Nikkonia Mwabuka said the bureau has vowed to help the group to attain the required standard, improve the production and processing of grapes to have a better yield that will compete in the EAC and SADC markets.

The training for processors and packers facilitated by TBS, SIDO, Agricultural Research College (TARI) Makutupora and Regional Administration and Local Government held in Dodoma City from November 15-16, the training will also be held in Hombolo on November 18-19, and in Mpunguzi from November 22-23, this year.
