Africa-Press – Tanzania. Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Mwinyi has stated that the Vision 2025 initiative has significantly improved citizens’ lives by enhancing healthcare services in the country.
Dr. Mwinyi made this statement during the launch of the first draft of Vision 2050 in Zanzibar on Wednesday, noting that the initiative has enabled over 75 percent of Isle residents to access healthcare services within a five-kilometer radius from their homes.
According to President Mwinyi, the initiative has contributed to reducing the mortality rate, increasing the number of women giving birth in healthcare facilities, and raising the average life expectancy from 52 years in 2000 to 65.5 years in 2022.
Additionally, he highlighted that maternal mortality rates have decreased from 750 deaths per 100,000 live births to 104 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2022. Similarly, newborn mortality rates have dropped from 85 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2000 to 36 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2022.
Speaking earlier, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa noted that the National Steering Committee for Vision 2050 has ensured that many citizens, including members of the diaspora, participated in the process of collecting opinions regarding the National Development Vision 2025.
The launch of the first draft of the National Development Vision 2050 follows a comprehensive process of collecting feedback from over 1.17 million citizens and stakeholders in Zanzibar between December 2023 and October 2024.
The feedback was gathered through various methods, including household surveys, SMS messages (USSD), websites, conferences, in-depth interviews, discussions with current and former leaders, meetings, seminars, and collected documents.
Moreover, between January and March 2025, the Draft Vision 2050 will be reviewed and finalized by government bodies, including the Permanent Secretaries, the National Planning Commission, and the Cabinet of Ministers.
