Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR High Court Judge Aziza Iddi Suwedi has said that collaboration and concerted efforts are vital tools in addressing Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Judge Suwedi said that leaving the work to the government alone will make it difficult to solve the problem.

“We need to work together to mitigate and possibly bring to an end violence against women and girls,” Ms Suwedi said here yesterday, when opening one-day workshop on GBV. The workshop is among activities lined up to mark this year’s ’16 Days of activism’, which normally starts from November 25 to December 10, of every year.

She said that the government cannot work alone, and that community and each person has a great role to play in minimising violence against women, girls and children.

Judge Suwedo said that the 16 Days of activism is a good reminder on how the country should tackle GBV.

“Some of the days to be marked include the women rights defenders’ day (November 29, 2021), followed by HIV/AIDS day on December 1 and People with disability day on December 3. Let us utilise the days to sensitize on the social problems,” the Judge said.

She thanked the department of constitution and paralegals for organising the workshop in Unguja and the Legal Services Facility (LSF) for supporting the workshop. Similar workshop will also to be held in Pemba tomorrow.

LSF representative Ms Mariam Mansab said they have been working closely with the department, promising to maintain their support.

Director, Department of Constitution and Paralegals Ms Hanifa Said said the workshops have been organized to address GBV challenges.

The workshops drew participants from the ministry responsible for social welfare & health, the Office of Chief Government Statistician (OCGS), paralegals, media and people with disabilities.
