Africa-Press – Tanzania. KISARAWE District Commissioner (DC) Jokate Mwegelo has ordered the arrest of some Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO) officers in the district for poor services to the public.
The irked DC arrived at the decision after listening to grievances of some residents in the area, who sought for services from the local Tanesco office, only to be rudely turned back.
In her impromptu visit to the Tanesco office yesterday, the district commissioner could not withstand the poor service and arrogance of some staff paid by taxpayers’ money to solve their problems.
She found a big number of people waiting to be served with some complaining that despite being there as early as 7am, chances of being assisted in the evening hours were still not there.
In her address, Ms Mwegelo said the major complain of the people was chronic corruption being entertained by some TANESCO officers, adding: “There are some officials who practice corruption and as a result they block free and efficient service to the public. I am instructing police to arrest the officials and keep them in remand as a lesson. “All those involved in poor service delivery to our citizens should be sent to police custody so that they recollect and learn. “These people have been arrogant and disrespect he citizens. What benefit do they have as employees of TANESCO? Disrespecting the nationals who seek genuine services is disrespect to President John Magufuli,” she posed.
Equally, the DC noted that the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) should probe ripe corruption in the Tanesco office and eradicate corrupt individuals.
“They should complain that there are no customers, but in this case they scare and chase the customers as if a burden to them. These customers should be your treasury and you should ensure you listen to their grievances,” she told the Tanesco staff.
The DC further said that she would not tolerate any complain again against TANESCO and the best thing, whoever feels dissatisfied should quit his/her work instead of spoiling the name of the entire staff.
“It is unacceptable to hear our citizens always complaining over services of Tanesco here in the district. We have been speaking about this many times but you don’t care and change. “Look, it took over a month for Tanesco to respond to a client just next door to them, when her house had an electricity fault. Not in my district,” she said.
In response, Chanika Tanesco Office Manager, Eng Nickson Babu promised to work on the challenges, adding that they will try to bring services closer to the people.
