Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner Stephen Kagaigai has warned village leaders against selling land to foreigners.
The regional boss maintained that perpetrators of such were likely to face the government’s wrath.
Mr Kagaigai who was speaking at training seminar for CCM leaders here recently, said his office had received reports of village leaders allegedly colluding with some land owners to sell plots to foreigners, without the government’s consent.
“It was come to our attention that some dishonest villagers leaders have started selling land, woe betide you,” cautioned the regional commissioner.
Mr Kagaigai insisted that it was wrong for such officials to engage in the sale of plots to non-citizens, especially for investment reasons.
“If a foreigner is in need of land, the government must be fully engage in the process,” he said.
According to the regional commissioner, the government was in full support of village leaders, saying they were the local leaders who not only act as pioneers of projects but also help in influencing and motivating their people to action.
In her earlier presentation at the seminar, the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) regional boss, Frida Wekesi urged the local leaders to shun such acts, warning that it was a loophole for corruption.
She also warned against power greed, saying it was also prerequisite for graft.
“This is because those who were contracted to implement development projects or who needed to be provided land would involve a few people instead of the whole village,” she observed.
Ms Wekesi underscored the importance of holding meetings when planning for developmental projects, adding that it will raise the villagers’ confidence on their leaders.
