Africa-Press – Tanzania. LOOKING to ensure all students attend classes, the government has availed Lushoto District in Tanga region with 2.1bn/- for the construction of 106 primary and secondary school classrooms.
This was revealed by Lushoto District Commissioner, Mr Kalisti Lazaro, noting that the fund was released by the central government through the Covid-19 relief package scheme.
Lushoto district comprises two district councils of Lushoto and Bumbuli and according to Mr Lazaro 25 satellite primary school classrooms will be constructed at the cost of 500m at Lushoto council.
He revealed that Lushoto district council will have a total of 27 new secondary school classrooms constructed for 540m/-.
According to the Lushoto DC, Bumbuli district council has been allocated over 1bn/- for the construction of 54 classrooms in 24 secondary schools.
“The central government has released these funds as part of the Covid-19 relief package scheme and will enable the construction of classrooms to ensure all students who qualify for secondary school enrolment in 2022 attend classes accordingly,” said the DC.
The 2.1bn/- is part of the 1.3tri/- relief package released by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to finance education, health and improve business infrastructures for small scale traders in the country.
DC Lazaro said they have formed a team to coordinate and supervise the construction of the classrooms, insisting that there will be transparency throughout the implementation of the projects.
The government has embarked on a massive plan to build 12,000 classrooms at the cost of 240bn/-in secondary schools as preparations for enrolling 1,022,936 Form One students in January next year.
The construction of the classrooms is expected to ease the accommodation of 600,000 students and address the shortage of classrooms by 100 per cent in secondary schools.
The government also is looking to build 3,000 classrooms in some 970 satellite schools at the cost of 60bn/- across the country to enable 135,000 pupils to get classrooms.
