Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Professor Adolf Mkenda, has launched a three-week-long celebration marking 50 years since the establishment of the Institute of Adult Education (IAE).

The Institute, established in 1975, began operations with the mandate to offer continuing education and adult learning across the country.

The golden jubilee celebrations aim to spotlight the critical role of literacy and lifelong learning, while also reigniting enthusiasm among young people and adults to gain skills in entrepreneurship and basic vocational training.

Speaking to reporters in Dodoma yesterday Prof Mkenda announced that the climax of the celebrations will be a high-level symposium to be held from August 25 to 27, 2025, at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Centre (JNICC) in Dar es Salaam.

He said the forum will bring together a broad range of education stakeholders to reflect on five decades of implementing the mission and vision of the Institute, and to chart the way forward for adult and continuing education.

This year’s celebrations are being held under the theme “Lifelong Learning for Sustainable Development”, which underscores the need to fast-track efforts at both national and international levels to advance adult education in Tanzania and raise awareness that non-formal education is a key driver of socio-economic transformation.

As part of the celebrations, Prof Mkenda said several key activities will be implemented, including capacity-building training for prison officers involved in inmate literacy programmes, as well as for resident tutors at the Institute’s headquarters in Dodoma.

The anniversary will also feature exhibitions showcasing programmes and services in adult and non-formal education, offering a platform for stakeholders to present their innovations, products, and community engagement initiatives

“These exhibitions will give the public an opportunity to see the diverse products and services provided by the Institute and its partners,” he said, adding that creative works by youth and adults engaged in non-formal education will also be on display.

“Among the services to be offered at the exhibitions include academic counselling and student admissions to various courses offered by the Institute and participating institutions,” he added.
