Mtwara, Lindi algae farmers plead for govt support

Africa-Press – Tanzania. FARMERS of algae in the Mtwara and Lindi regions have asked the government to create enabling environment that would help in the rise in prices of such marine products so that they could earn profitably.

They also asked traders to buy the product which now they have added more value.

Speaking to journalists recently, Ms Subira Muhibu, one of the algae farmers from the Jionee group at Mkungu village in Mtwara Region, said though the farming of algae has many opportunities but still attract a low number of buyers.

She said the product if more value is added to it could uplift the wellbeing of farmers through improved income. One of their challenges, she said, was a lack of equipment to harvest the algae.

“After getting training on entrepreneurship, algae farming and producing various domestic products we have managed to increase our production,” she said.

The training was organized by a Non-government organization called the Might Society Against Poverty (Msoapo).

Ms Muhibu thanked the Msoapo for building their capacity on improving farming of the algae, something which helped women in the group to improve their income.

The organization has also donated working equipment to the group to increase efficiency in their activities, including harvesting the algae monthly whereby they harvest between 800 and 1000 kilogrammes of the product unlike previous.

On her part, the chairperson of the Juhudi group at the village, Ms Hadija Mohamed, said they look forward to establishing a factory for producing various products from the algae.

On his part, the Public Relations Officer of the Msoapo, Mr Hamad Hamis, said the organization empowers women and youth economically.
