Africa-Press – Tanzania. THE Commissioner General of the Tanzania Revenue Authority, Yusuph Juma Mwenda, on February 18, 2026, officially launched the Board of Directors for its Premier League team, TRA United Sports Club at TRA offices in Dar es Salaam.
He urged the board to fully manage the team and make it competitive and formidable in both domestic and international leagues.
Among other directives, he emphasized maintaining team discipline so that it can serve as a model compared with other clubs participating in various leagues across Tanzania.
He explained that the intention behind establishing the team goes beyond entertainment — it also aims to send a message to citizens about the importance of voluntary tax payment, which is a key foundation for national economic growth. He expressed hope for positive results following the board’s formation.
“We formed this team mainly to connect TRA’s responsibilities with direct public participation in understanding the importance of voluntary tax payment. I believe you, as the Board, will do everything possible to ensure citizens see paying taxes as their responsibility,” Mwenda said.
He added that he recognizes the importance of sports in the country and expects the team and its board to become a model in the sports sector, including encouraging especially foreign players to contribute taxes from their earnings.
Mwenda also said that to achieve the goals of the national Vision 2050 agenda, TRA — as a key engine in boosting national revenue — must use various revenue-collection approaches, including the sports sector. He believes that with professional management, the board can achieve the intended goals.
For his part, Board Chairman Edmund Kawamala commended Mwenda for initiating the team, expressing confidence it could become one of the most formidable football teams on the African continent.
He said the board will do everything possible to use the team to educate the public on tax compliance, noting that many citizens love sports and that TRA United can serve as a platform for tax awareness.
Besides Chairman Kawamala, the board includes eight other members, among them former Secretary General of the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Wilfred Kidao, Private Sector Foundation Tanzania Chairperson Angelina Ngalula, along with Juma Kisongo, Kamna Shomari, Zahoro Salum, Paul Walalaze, and Elikunda Mndeme — all TRA employees — while one final board position is expected to be filled soon.
