Mwinyi attributes prices rise to Covid-19

Africa-Press – Tanzania. PRESIDENT Hussein Mwinyi has cited Covid-19 as one of the factors behind recent commodities’ prices rise in the Isles.

“People in both rural and urban areas have in the past three months been feeling the pinch of increase of prices of essential commodities in Zanzibar,” said President Mwinyi.

Dr Mwinyi made statement over the weekend while joining Muslims in Uzini village, central district, South Unguja region for Friday prayers.

President Mwinyi said that apart from the health crisis, the pandemic has disrupted production of goods and transportation.

“Let us continue praying to the God for our country and the world so that the battle against Covid-19 is won. The threat still exists and through prayers and taking health precautions, we hope to control the pandemic,” Dr Mwinyi said.

He said the government has been taking serious measures to control unnecessary prices’ increase, adding that all traders are required not to use Covid-19 as an excuse to raise goods’ prices.

Equally, Dr Mwinyi reminded the citizens on the importance of collaborating with the government and stakeholders to stop violence against children and women in the country.

“We have improved laws so that perpetrators have no room to hide, but victims and their relatives, members of the community, and key stakeholders (police and judiciary staff) have a great role to play in ensuring justice to the victims of abuse,” he stated.

In a separate development, in response to a plea for improvement of the feeder road to Uzini, President Mwinyi said the road would be included in the planned 270 kilometres feeder roads’ project soon to be commenced.

On behalf of the people of Uzini, the village Sheikh Maalim Ali Vuai thanked Dr Mwinyi for his continuous programme of meeting the people in different parts of the country and listen to their grievances.

The Mufti Office Secretary- Sheikh Khalid Ali Mfaume, who is in-charge of Masjid (Mosques) and Madras (Quran schools) also praised Dr Mwinyi for going for prayers in different mosques.

Presenting monthly inflation updates here, Mr Khamis Abdulrahman Msham, from the Office of Chief Government Statistician (OCGS) said that the inflation rate in November slightly increased to 2.2 per cent from 2.1 per cent in October this year.

He informed journalists that food and non-alcoholic beverages inflation increased with a senior officer from Bank of Tanzania, Dr Ulrack Mwambura, further explaining that despite the prices’ rise, the government was still managing it.
