Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President, Dr Hussein Mwinyi has welcomed a proposal by the Parliament to establish a higher learning institution in Zanzibar, saying the move would strengthen the Isles’ position as a regional education hub.
Dr Mwinyi made the remarks on Wednesday when he met members of the Parliamentary Service Commission, led by Speaker Musa Azan Zungu, at the State House in Zanzibar.
During the meeting, President Mwinyi expressed support for Parliament’s plan to construct a College of Diplomacy and Parliamentary Services in Zanzibar, describing it as a strategic investment for the nation.
He said the establishment of the college would attract students and professionals from various countries, stimulate economic activity and increase national revenue through education and related services.
“Zanzibar needs more universities to firmly position itself on the global map as a centre of excellence in higher education and professional training,” Dr Mwinyi said.
He assured the delegation that the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar stands ready to cooperate fully in implementing the project and urged the Commission to expedite the process so the Isles can begin to realise its benefits.
Speaker Zungu commended Dr Mwinyi for his leadership and efforts to advance development in Zanzibar, particularly in infrastructure and economic growth aligned with global trends.
Members of the Parliamentary Service Commission are in Zanzibar for a three-day leadership training programme for the Parliament’s Leadership Committee and the Commission, taking place in Tunguu, South Unguja.
