Africa-Press – Tanzania. ZANZIBAR President Hussein Mwinyi has hailed the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Venance Mabeyo for wise and exemplary leadership.

CDF Mabeyo on Monday bade farewell to Dr Mwinyi, as he is heading to reach his statutory retirement after serving the highest post at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) for five years.

Dr Mwinyi congratulated Mabeyo for good performance throughout his term as CDF as well as serving the TPDF with highest degree of integrity, including ensuring that various challenges in the army are resolved.

President Mwinyi held talks with the CDF, who arrived at the Mnazi Mmoja based State House here to say goodbye to him following the end of his service in the Armed Forces at the end of the month.

Dr Mwinyi described Mr Mabeyo as a leader who is doing his best in the army including strengthening good relations with his subordinates and his fellow leaders.

President Mwinyi also revealed his working relations with CDF Mabeyo, during his time as Minister for Defence and National Service, saying it was exceptionally good, a situation that enabled them to work closely together.

He explained “General Mabeyo is a good leader… during my time as Minister of Defence and National Service he accorded me with all necessary support to deliver and now as President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council, he provides me with maximum cooperation. I appreciate, and will continue to remember his contribution.”

President Mwinyi wished General Mabeyo all the best in his retirement. However, he expressed confidence that even after retirement; CDF Mabeyo will continue offering his wisdom and expatriate support to the army, especially given that he has served the institution for a long time.

In addition, President Mwinyi explained about the ongoing measures being taken by both governments (Zanzibar and Union) in collaboration with the TPDF in finding lasting solutions to land disputes in areas close to army barracks.

Dr Mwinyi thanked the Union government for allocating a special budget for compensation, which will significantly help to find a lasting solution to the disputes over land between the army and people who have occupied the areas.

Earlier, Mr Mabeyo expressed gratitude to President Mwinyi for successfully executing his leadership responsibilities from his time as Minister of Defence to the present as President of Zanzibar and Chairman of the Revolutionary Council.

The TPDF chief described Dr Mwinyi as a leader who has worked with him for a long time and helped him in effectively carrying out his duties within the Armed Forces.

“I wish you good health and longevity, Mr President and your family… I greatly appreciate the cooperation you have been given me during your tenure from your time as minister to this day. Thank you very much,” General Mabeyo said.

He said that TPDF and its leadership will continue being close to Dr Mwinyi for his wisdom in addressing the various challenges within the Armed Forces, to ultimately achieve great success.

Mr Mabeyo praised the progress taken in solving the land challenges and expressed his expectation for the success that will be made in finding a lasting solution to the disputes, especially considering that the army is part of the people.

General Mabeyo was appointed CDF in February 2017 by the late President and Commander-In-Chief of Armed Forces, Dr John Magufuli. Mabeyo replaced General Davis Mwamunyange, who had reached his statutory retirement.

Before the new appointment Magufuli had promoted Mabeyo from Lieutenant General to General.
